What is an Expert Advisor (EA)? MetaTrader EAs Explained

An Expert Advisor (EA) is an automated trading program that runs inside the MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 trading platform. It watches the market, decides when to trade according to fixed rules, and opens, manages and closes positions on its own, without the trader clicking buttons. Expert Advisors are written in MetaTrader's own programming languages, MQL4 and MQL5, and are mostly used for forex and CFD trading.

What Does an Expert Advisor Do?

An EA turns a trading strategy into code. Typically it:

• Reads market data on every price tick or new bar: prices, indicators and other timeframes.
• Generates signals from the strategy rules, such as an indicator crossover, a breakout or a price pattern.
• Executes orders: market orders, pending orders, stop loss and take profit.
• Manages open trades: trailing stops, breakeven, partial closes and time-based exits.
• Applies risk rules: lot size per trade, maximum positions, daily loss limits and filters for news or spreads.

Expert Advisor vs Indicator vs Script

MetaTrader knows three kinds of programs. An indicator only calculates and displays values on the chart. A script runs once to perform a single task, such as closing all positions. An Expert Advisor runs continuously and trades on its own. Many EAs use custom indicators for their signals.

How Expert Advisor Trading Works in Practice

1. Install the EA file (.ex4 or .ex5) in the MetaTrader data folder and attach it to a chart.
2. Configure the inputs: risk per trade, stop loss, take profit, trading hours and filters.
3. Backtest in the MetaTrader Strategy Tester on historical data, with realistic spreads and costs.
4. Demo or forward test on a demo account to see how it behaves in live conditions.
5. Run live on a VPS, a server that keeps MetaTrader running 24/5 close to the broker's servers.

Pros and Limitations

Pros: an EA trades without emotion, follows the rules exactly, never misses a signal and can watch many markets at once, around the clock.

Limitations: an EA is only as good as its strategy. A strategy that looks great in a backtest can still fail live because of over-optimisation, changing market conditions, spreads, slippage or broker differences. Poorly written EAs also fail on practical details, such as requotes, rejected orders or lost connections.

Buying an EA or Having One Built

There are thousands of ready-made Expert Advisors from EA vendors and on the MQL5 Market. They are cheap and quick to start with, but you don't know exactly what's inside, you share the strategy with every other buyer, and results promised in marketing rarely survive live trading. Be wary of any vendor guaranteeing returns.
